January was colder than December, which is unusual, December is usually the coldest month of the year. January was also significantly drier than January 2010, and significantly drier than December. We did receive 1 inch of snow on January 3rd (the .04 inches of moisture).

Again, the long term forecast calls for Utah to be warmer and drier than normal. But December was extremely wet, and the temperatures so far indicate the temperature to be well below normal, not above.

The "water year" statewide is way above normal, two to three times normal in many areas. Concerns about the drought have vanished; flooding in the spring thaw is now the concern.

The 12 degree temperature on January 1st is the coldest recorded temperature in several years, for Toquerville.
